-Angela Chen, Eskwelabs Co-Founder & CEO
Last August 4, 2020, we talked about the importance of Data Science as an emerging field in the Philippines in the TechX event organized by the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Directorate of the FEU Institute of Technology in partnership with the AIM-Dado Banatao Incubator (DBI). TechX is one of the flagship monthly events of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Directorate aimed to create awareness and educate FEU Tech, FEU Alabang, and FEU Diliman students and professors on global emerging trends and current advancements in technology.

π Women in Data: Data Talks Series
"What attracted you to data Science?"
I'm actually a Biology major. My interest is mostly on ecology. I like nature, animals, that's my interest. In ecology, we have a lot of research studies that focus on gathering a lot of dataβimages of species, getting their temperature, salinity, those things. Those are all data. You can imagine how it is in the research field, especially when I was in college, where everything was very manual. That's how I got into data science, because I was just thinking, "There should be a faster way to handle this data, there has to be a better way to handle it." So I started researching about it, and learned about data science back then. And I think it wasn't as big a buzz word as it is now. But I realized, you can connect data, handling data, this new field that's heavily focused on data, with your interestsβthere's an intersection. And then that's how I got into data science."
βJulia Las, MSDS Candidate at AIM & Eskwelabs Alumna
Listen to our Women in Data talk with Carla Mumar as moderator (Founder & CEO of SCALE Solutions), and Kathleen Reverente (She Loves Data Manila Chapter Lead, FTW Scholar) and Julia Las (MSDS Candidate at AIM, Eskwelabs Fellow) as panellists. In this discussion, we use results from the BCG study of STEM students on what drives their decisions to pursue (or not to pursue) a career related to data science so we can examine what can be done to encourage more women into the field.
