E is for Eskwelabs Issue 035 - Data Science, Startups, and Job Openings 📈💼
In our thirty-fifth issue, we will have a look at innovative entrepreneurs known as startups, the startup mindset and its benefits for professional development, and some open positions at Eskwelabs.
We created this newsletter to keep our alums, partners, and anyone interested in learning skills for the future of work updated and connected to our ever-growing family. If you want to read our previous issues, you can check them out here.
Hi, Mel here! 👋 How are you doing these days? Some of you may be feeling blue because of the recent defeat of a boxing icon and the continuing lockdowns. Don’t worry though, we are here to cheer you up! Since the start of this newsletter, we have made it our business to share stories that inform and inspire.
Speaking of business, this issue is exactly about that. We will get a chance to explore the exciting world of business enterprises called startups. Their unique perspectives are a gold mine for anyone looking for ideas on how to grow professionally.
Eskwelabs has also been a helpful partner of startups since it was established in 2019. More recently, we have partnered with a successful multinational company and a renowned learning institution to help startup founders and teams get access to quality data upskilling programs. This issue gives space for this recent development.
Last but not least, we are happy to announce that we are hiring! If you or anyone you know shares Eskwelabs’ vision of making data education more accessible, then you may read on to have a look at our available positions!
We hope that this issue about startups will give you a good start for this week and kickstart some careers.
Happy reading!
“You don’t have to be good to start...you just have to start to be good!”.

⚡ Accenture provides funding to startups via learning institutions
Eskwelabs was invited last August 24 to attend the grant awarding ceremony of Accenture, an information technology services corporation that has offices worldwide. In this event, the Asian Institute of Management - Dado Banatao Incubator (AIM-DBI) was one of the many learning institutions in the country that received funding from the Fortune 500 multinational company.
Eskwelabs was called to attend this event because we have partnered with AIM-DBI in coming up with a data science learning program tailored specifically for startups. This data upskilling track is called “Innovate with Data.” You will learn more about this program in the upcoming issues.

⚡ How adopting the startup mindset helps improve competence at work
A lot of startups have changed the world and made it a better place. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, was in a sense a startup founder in the 1980s when he created one of the first personal computers. Since then, Apple has launched many groundbreaking products which include the MacBook and the iconic iPhone.
Even though many of you may not actually be business owners or techies, the mindset and values that Jobs and other startup founders have developed can still help you succeed in the workplace. Among the many traits that startups have which can help you grow in your careers include:
Tolerance for Risk and Experimentation - According to University of California senior fellow Mark Coopersmith, Silicon Valley companies (mainly involved with computers and software) succeed because their employees have the tendency to experiment and embrace risk. After all, better products and services wouldn’t be possible if employees or business leaders didn’t try to go out of their comfort zones and take chances.
If you are fresh out of college or just starting out in the working world, an attitude of calculated risk-taking generally leads to success. When you take a risk and succeed, you often end up with a much higher reward than you would have gotten playing it safe. If you want to learn more about the risk-reward dynamic, you may read this article.
Making Failure Your “Friend” - Coopersmith adds this very important attitude towards failure. He says that startup leaders succeed because they see failure as opportunities instead of something shameful or unwelcome.
Inc.com has an interesting insight on how failure ultimately leads to success. Zac Cramer, the author of the online article, mentions his story on how he was able to improve the way he communicates with clients by acknowledging his failures and learning from them. You may read more about his story here.
If you have difficulty forgiving yourself for failing at work or any other pursuit in your life, this article might help you get back on track.
There are other ways through which you can improve yourself for a better career. Aside from a change in mindset, it is vital you have the right knowledge and skills to prepare yourself for the future of work.
Our Data Science Fellowship and Data Analytics Bootcamp both feature what is called the Job Interview Guarantee. Among the many perks you’ll get if you avail of this guarantee include career coaching. Therefore, if you study with us, you benefit from two things: data upskilling and holistic career development.
