E is for Eskwelabs Issue 037 - Eskwelabs Opens Doors for Working with Startups
In our thirty-seventh issue, we will focus on how our data science program immerses learners in the exciting and innovative world of startups.
We created this newsletter to keep our alums, partners, and anyone interested in learning skills for the future of work updated and connected to our ever-growing family. If you want to read our previous issues, you can check them out here.
Happy Monday everyone! Mel here! 👋 Hope you are having a good start to the week. Speaking of starts, this newsletter issue focuses on startups. But we won’t be discussing how startups were started or other cold, encyclopedic facts about them. This issue celebrates some of the country’s most innovative startups and their close connection with Eskwelabs’ data upskilling programs. 💡 🎓
First in our menu for this issue is the official launch of our Industry Apprenticeship. We want to introduce our new paid, work-study scheme with a bang and we’ll provide information about our online kickoff event for this apprenticeship. 🚀
Next on our plate are summaries of how our most recent data science graduates have contributed to the growth of cutting-edge startup companies. The fields where our most recent alumni created data science projects may surprise you since, at first glance, the fields don’t seem to be related to the world of data science. Nonetheless, these fields are vital for the order and survival of our society. 🌏
Lastly, we have gathered important information for our upcoming Data Science Fellowship cohort. If you want to get involved in the rewarding and socially impactful world of startups, applying for the Fellowship is an option you may want to consider. 🖥️💰
Every week is a new chapter, a new beginning. May the start of your work week be as fresh, productive and fulfilling as possible. We hope the latest developments in this issue will inspire you to make the right decisions in your career and help get you through the week. 💪💖
Happy reading! 📖🥤
“You shouldn’t focus on why you can’t do something, which is what most people do. You should focus on why perhaps you can, and be one of the exceptions.”

⚡ The formal launch of Eskwelabs’ Industry Apprenticeship Program
Our Industry Apprenticeship is now online, literally. We are cordially inviting you to an online event that formally launches our latest offering on October 8, 2021. Through this Zoom meeting, you’ll get to know more about the latest learning feature for our Data Science Fellowship and Data Analytics Bootcamp.
Some of you may have already heard of our latest program through past newsletter issues or online content. But for those who haven’t, here is a quick summary.
The Industry Apprenticeship is our creative way of restructuring the old internship model by partnering with startup companies. With the help of Eskwelabs’ industry-leading mentors, participants of the Apprenticeship get paid while working on real-world data projects for startups. These startup entrepreneurs are associated with the Asian Institute of Management - Dado Banatao Incubator (AIM-DBI), an institution known for championing innovation and social impact.
If you’re interested to know more about our Industry Apprenticeship, you may register here before the Zoom event starts on October 8, at 7:30 PM (Manila time for those based overseas). We look forward to seeing you and hearing your questions!
⚡ Eskwelabs’ Cohort 7 designs product recommender for agritech startup Mayani
Have you ever wondered how online shopping apps are able to “magically” predict what you might want to buy in the future? This unique capability is all made possible through the power of data science.
Mayani, an agritech startup, is one beneficiary of our alumni’s data science skills. Through an online platform, Mayani allows customers to have farm products like fruits, vegetables and meat delivered at their doorstep. The fact that Mayani acts as a bridge between hungry buyers and small farmers shows Eskwelabs’ passion for the advocacy of “data for good.”
With the close and supportive supervision of an industry mentor, our Data Science Fellowship Cohort 7 graduates designed a recommender engine for Mayani. The engine gives Mayani’s clients product suggestions based on the customers’ most recent and most frequent transactions. For example, if you buy fruits more often than vegetables on Mayani’s website, the system will tend to suggest different types of fruits you can purchase.
If you want to learn more about how our alumni were able to design their unique recommender engine, you may watch this video. 📺
⚡ Eskwelabs’ data science graduates classifies cases for legal startup Digest
The law, for many people, is difficult to digest. The long sentences that outline our society’s rules and regulations can be hard to understand, sometimes even for legal professionals. That is why legal technology platform Digest was established. Aside from helping law students “digest” the law better through providing study resources like case summaries, Digest also helps clients access the best lawyers for a reasonable cost.
This startup is able to offer its unique brand of legal services through leveraging technology and the skills of Eskwelabs’ data science graduates.
In particular, our Cohort 7 Data Science Fellows, with the help of an industry mentor, worked on AI-driven software that automates the process of classifying thousands of Supreme Court cases. This classifier is extremely useful for Digest and lawyers working in other law firms. Quick retrieval of relevant cases from the Supreme Court’s massive archive helps legal professionals efficiently deal with their clients’ particular situation.
