E is for Eskwelabs Issue 053 - Oh the Joy of Being Free to Learn ✨📚
In our fifty-third issue, we explore the theme of freedom as it relates to the six types of joy. We align each type of joy with related Eskwelabs content and events that are new.
We created this newsletter to keep our alums, partners, and anyone interested in learning skills for the future of work updated and connected to our ever-growing family. If you want to read our previous issues, you can check them out here.
It is easy to be joyful when one is free.
How do you savor your freedom in pursuing a life of joyful learning?
Hi everyone, it’s Francine here! 👋 Guess where I am right now while writing Issue 53? I’m in the Eskwelabs office with my teammates who are in fact real people beyond their Zoom and Google Meets rectangles! 😂 What a joy it is to be able to see teammates face-to-face! There is incredible freedom in working side by side in the same meeting rooms.
Joy and freedom are the guiding themes of today’s issue. We’re specifically guided by this article called, “The Six Types of Joy” by Stephanie Harrison. She’s the founder & CEO of The New Happy, “which is a platform and community that is changing the way the world thinks about happiness.” Each type of joy will be a section in this newsletter that’s aligned with either new Eskwelabs content or news. Happy reading! 📖
The types of joy we’ll explore and how they’re related to our June theme of “freedom”:
🌱 The joy of growth
📚 The joy of play
💭 The joy of awe
🤗 The joy of relationship
💪 The joy of being yourself
💖 The joy of our senses

“We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.” —Peter Drucker
What are the main machine learning tasks you'll be encountering in your career as a data scientist?
Answer: Regression, clustering, and classification!
Basty Vergara, Cohort 8 Data Science Fellowship alum, makes machine learning less intimidating and more fun with his joy-filled blog posts. His series of blog posts is specifically called, “From the Notebook of Our Fellows.”
It’s called such because readers will be guided by our very own alumni through a mix of basic and advanced data science concepts. Every time you read from one of our Fellows’ notebooks, just imagine that you have a data BFF or lifelong learning friend who’ll hold your hand at every step.
These 3 blog posts are accessible and friendly guides to the what, why, and how of the:
Happy reading, Eskweloves! You can check out more from Basty via his Notion, and you can connect with him via LinkedIn. Go on over and send him some love and thanks for his creative use of memes in his blog posts. 💬
📚 The joy of play and the freedom to create
How do we keep Eskwelabs bootcamps engaging, relevant, and community-driven?
Answer: Data sprints!
They're also known as project-based learning sprints where learners complete data projects in 2-week bursts, mimicking the way that tech teams all around the world have been working for the past few years.

The Data Science Fellowship has 4 data sprints in total. These make one impressive portfolio! The capstone project that you create at the end of the 12-week program is the final entry in that portfolio that’ll set you apart from other data science job candidates.
🖥️ Cohort 10 of the Data Science Fellowship starts on September 12, 2022. Enrol here.

Deadline of assessment exam: August 21, 2022 (Multiple choice)

On the other hand, our Data Analytics Bootcamp has 2 sprints in total. The remaining weeks are dedicated to doing a Company Business Review with one of Eskwelabs’ company partners. In this major project, our learners get to see the entire data analytics pipeline in action especially from a business perspective. They get to present in front of real clients, defend their entire process, and come up with business recommendations.
📊 Cohort 7 of the Data Analytics Bootcamp starts on July 18, 2022. Enrol here.

💭 The joy of awe and the freedom to dream
We dream of a Philippines where every Filipino has the data literacy skills to be a well-informed and productive citizen. Read the “Analytics in the Philippines Automated Election System” blog post here. 📚
We dream of a world where data is always used for good and every human can break free from their dependence on social media. Read the “Breaking free from social media addiction” blog post here. 📚
🤗 The joy of relationship and the freedom to connect
In an online world of MOOCs or massive open online courses, it can get lonely in a crowd of millions. It’s been a decade since the modern MOOC movement began and from the initial 300,000 learners, there are now more than 220 million learners reached.
So raise your hand (or click the heart button on this newsletter issue!) if you can relate to feeling lonely in a crowd.
In our Eskwelabs bootcamps, whether it’s a class of 15 or 30, there is a sense of connection that we are intentional in cultivating. For potential learners, we give a preview of these connectedness even in the events we like to host.
And that’s why you’re invited!
🖥️ Open House for Cohort 10 (Data Science Fellowship)
Believing in your potential is the first step—and we've got an entire team of cheerleaders eager to cheer you on. You'll meet them in our Data Science Fellowship Open House for Cohort 10 on June 23, 2022 from 7:00 - 8:30 PM.
📊 Review Session for Cohort 7 (Data Analytics Bootcamp)
We believe in learning by doing. Our Review Session on June 30, 2022 from 7:00 - 8:00 PM is the perfect place for you to practice and prepare for the entrance assessment with potential classmates, especially if you're looking to enrol in the Data Analytics Bootcamp for Cohort 7!
💪 The joy of being yourself and the freedom to contribute
A major driver in the increase of the global market size of EdTech is the shift of learners in their preference of online learning vs. traditional. Online learning is seen as more affordable and convenient. In 2021, it’s been reported that “the global EdTech market size was valued at USD 85 billion.”
If you’ve got a heart like an Eskwelabs team member, then what excited you more than that number would be the millions of learners you could possibly reach and the thriving lives they’d lead in the future of work.
“A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of human history.” —Mahatma Gandhi

💖 The joy of our senses and the freedom to feel
Together, let us… LEARN something new and UNLEARN something old.
There is great joy and freedom in being allowed and able to feel our feelings. This goes for all kinds of feelings, because all of them serve a purpose.
And how is this related to data? Susan David, who is an award-winning Harvard Medical School psychologist and the author of “Emotional Agility,” once said that “emotions are data, they are not directives.” Some food for thought! 🧠
