E is for Eskwelabs Issue 66: Why We're Looking Forward to the New Year 🥂
Beyond the feasts, gatherings and fireworks is another year and another opportunity to grow. Happy New Year, Eskweloves! 🎊
We created this newsletter to keep our alums, partners, and anyone interested in learning skills for the future of work updated and connected to our ever-growing family. If you want to read our previous issues, you can check them out here.
Ciao! This is Meg speaking. 😉 We’re counting down to 2023 and excitement is at an all-time high! Issue 66 is meant to convince you that there are more things to look forward to than to worry about in the new year. As long as we know WHY we’re doing what we’re doing, we’d see the clean slate presented before us as an opportunity to plan and strategize for self-improvement. 💯

Ingredients:
50ml Campari
50ml Dry Vermouth
200ml Prosecco
Orange peel, to serve
Method:
Pour the Campari and vermouth into a short tumbler and fill halfway with ice. Top up with prosecco and serve with a twist of orange peel.

🕛 The purpose of anticipation
With prices of basic commodities going up, the daily commute to work more difficult, COVID STILL an alarming concern, and climate change getting worse, why would I look forward to the coming year? 💭 Anticipation prevents stagnation! As learners working to realize our purpose, we have to have something to look forward to in order to see challenges as opportunities. 👏 We keep an open mind and start reflecting on what feels exciting for us. How can we make room for more of that in our life right now? 😊
🌃 Making room for what’s ahead!
We look forward not only to big, extravagant events but also to the little things that we encounter in our everyday lives! Allow me to enlighten you with some examples. 🤩
Movies 🎥
For fans of superhero movies, 💪 you’ve got a great lineup next year! These heroes are making a comeback: Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Blockbuster directors are showcasing their talent once more! 🍿 You can look forward to Barbie by Greta Gerwig, Dune: Part Two by Denis Villeneuve and Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, to name a few.
Popular film series are also taking the spotlight this 2023, 🎬 such as John Wick: Chapter 4, Fast X, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (yes, still with THE Harrison Ford!), Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Feeling excited yet?
Sports 🏅
Have you moved on from the World Cup results yet? ⚽ Worry not, here’s some international sports events you can anticipate in 2023!
January 16, 2023: 2023 Australian Open
February 5, 2023: Super Bowl LVII
March 5, 2023: 2023 Formula 1 World Championship
May 28, 2023: 2023 French Open
May 31, 2023: 2023 UEFA Europa League Final
June 1, 2023: 2023 NBA Finals
June 16, 2023: 2023 AFC Asian Cup
July 1, 2023: 2023 Tour de France
August 25, 2023: 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup (the Philippines is participating here!)
August 28, 2023: 2023 US Open
We can learn a thing or two from athletes, as sportsmanship, anticipation, and self-development are closely tied to each other. 🔗 The events above are great opportunities to observe these qualities blend together, so I hope these excite you! For a longer list of sport events in the coming year, read here! ✅
Science and Data 📊
If you haven’t had your fill of excitement from the events above, then here are some mind-blowing advances in science and data that you can look forward to in 2023!
More images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. 🔭 The first set of images were released last July 12, 2022 and is arguably the most legendary space discovery in the last decade. We can definitely enter the new year and expect to uncover more truths about the history of our universe! 🌌

An Earth System Observatory and Open Science. 🌎 This cloud-based infrastructure is a partnership between NASA and commercial and international entities focused on urgent earth action in different branches of science. Their open science framework makes data inclusive so everyone can make an impact on Earth’s changing climate. 🤝
Last but not least, we can expect a society even more reliant on data. 🖥️ Here are just some of the trends in 2023:
More companies are predicted to build more data-as-a-service (DaaS) platforms as the need to share governed data and insights with other organizations are increasing. 💼
Augmented analytics will also take the stage in the near future, using machine learning and natural language processing to automatically generate analytics reports that otherwise would take weeks or months to do. 👨💻
Speaking of tasks that take time to accomplish, synthetic data generation hopes to expedite data collection in 2023. 💌 Drawing patterns from real data to come up with artificial data in quantity would respond to the difficulties data privacy posed in the past year.
There’s so much more to talk about regarding data trends in 2023 and you can look forward to discussing it in Issue 67! 🔜 Sorry to keep you waiting, but I have an idea of what you can do to scratch that data itch in the meantime. 🤔 Enroll in our new bootcamp cohorts!

🌄 Consolidating strengths and visualizing the future
The only constant thing is change and the future is full of them, so it makes the best sense to keep looking forward. 🔍 Despite the roadblocks we experience in our personal and professional lives, we gather our strengths, use them to make the most of what we have, and anticipate that whatever outcome we get it is a meaningful and a purposeful one. ✨ What makes this process all the more beautiful is when you do it with a group of people who are as driven by their mission and are as excited about the future as you are. 👯 That’s why for the last segment of our very last issue for the year, I’m proud to share a glimpse of Eskwelabs’ milestones in 2022!
Our Learning Sprints 🏃♂️ had its first ever university partner with which we had 255 students over 2 cohorts! The sprints were impactful as we have heard from our learners themselves:
“Eskwelabs is the definition of modern learning in visual mode to learn more about how data and technology works today.”
“To Eskwelabs professors & mentors
I would like to express my deepest thanks to all of you. You guided us and taught us something new & helping us grow here in our class. In times of difficulty, you never leave us, instead, you helped us. Thanks to ma’am Jen for guiding group 13 & 14. THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!”
Not only did we sprint with schools but also with government agencies and businesses which amassed a total of 600 learners over 9 sprints with around 40 mentors. 🏢 Good job team! 👏
The celebration continues with our Data Analytics Bootcamp (DAB) which had a total of 158 graduates and our Data Science Fellowship (DSF) which had 51 graduates in 2022! 👨💻 Thanks to the efforts of the team, the programs are now established. They were also able to boost our learners’ careers and maintain customer satisfaction throughout the whole year. 👏
The party goes on with our Data Literacy Skillscourse (DLS)! 📚 The program went through a lot of evolutions in the past year. After experimenting which best fits the learners’ goals and the program’s objectives, we finally have a stable model for DLS that is poised to achieve its goals next year! Woohoo! 👏
I can only imagine what the future holds for the whole Eskwelabs. ❤️ This is the best example of how being in touch with our purpose will give us the push we need to make impactful results. Congratulations to everyone and a job well done!
You’ve reached the end of this issue and the end of our E for Eskwelabs Newsletters for 2022. (and probably the bottom of your glass too!) 🍾 When we see each other again in January we’re renewed, well-rested individuals with a mission to make 2023 even more memorable and impactful. Raising a glass to you, dear readers! Health, happiness, and prosperity to you and yours in the new year!! 🎆
💌 Learning with you,
