In this issue, we explore the importance of investing in ourselves to remain knowledgeable and competitive in our niche. 🎯 We take a look at the rewards of being a data analyst and data scientist this 2023 and discuss why Eskwelabs’ Bootcamps are the perfect place to grow this passion for data.
Ciao! This is Meg speaking. 😉 Last issue, we kept up with trends as a means to find our niche. It was the perfect way to get us started with our new learning year, but now that we’re settled in, what’s next? ✨ Let me share a quote from Dr. Seuss that I believe perfectly captures our vibe as we close January:
“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” 🔭
Issue 68 is an invitation to plant seeds in an evergreen garden that is ourselves. 🌻 After we find our niches, we make conscious efforts to invest in our passions to ensure that we remain knowledgeable, skilled, and competitive in our areas of expertise. This process is ongoing, and the rewards are endless. ☀️
Plant, cultivate, and garden through this letter as we answer these questions: 🧐
What does it mean to be a data analyst and data scientist this 2023? 🎒
What can I expect from Eskwelabs this 2023? 🌱

An Important Announcement 🎤
This 2023, we reaffirm our commitment to build the best upskilling solutions for you, dear Eskweloves. We feel the most blessed to spend another year of learning with you and we are eternally grateful for your support! 🤗
We’d like to announce that we will be increasing our tuition fees for our Data Analytics Bootcamp and our Data Science Fellowship to reflect our commitment to small-group mentorship from industry professionals and to launch new community benefits.
This increase will take effect on:
The Data Analytics Bootcamp Cohort 10 Admissions cycle, which will start on January 16, 2023.
The Data Science Fellowship Cohort 12 Admissions cycle, which will start on February 21, 2023.
✅ For more information on these updates, you may view our blog post on our latest fees here.
An Investment that pays the Best Interest 👏
As a learner, you’d want to invest in an environment that is innovative and human-centred, with an abundance of opportunities to apply your learnings. 🗺️ Eskwelabs will continue to provide all Eskwelabs bootcamp learners with quality mentorship that drastically makes an impact on the learning outcomes. 💯 This is evidenced by our experiences and from Bloom’s 2 Sigma Problem.
The 2 Sigma Problem 📚
Benjamin S. Bloom was an American educational psychologist known for making contributions to the classification of educational objectives and the theory of mastery learning.
He conducted a study called “The 2 Sigma Problem: The Search for Methods of Group Instruction as Effective as One-to-One Tutoring.” 👨🏫 In this paper, he compared student learning under three different conditions of instruction:
Conventional ✏️ - There are 30 students in class with one teacher. Tests are given periodically to measure the students’ learning.
Mastery Learning 🧠 - There are also 30 students and one teacher in class with the same tests given periodically. This is then followed by feedback and corrective procedures to determine the mastery of the students.
Tutoring 🤝 - Students each have their own tutor who administers instruction, tests, feedback and corrective procedures like that of Mastery Learning.
Upon investigation, learners who are tutored closely performed better, getting a mark 2 sigmas (from a ‘C’ grade to an ‘A’ grade) above the average of the class. ✅ It is also worth noting that the tutoring group had a positive attitude towards the learning tasks and that they had little need for corrective procedures.
To that end, an update on our fees is necessary to continue to provide a best-in class mentor-driven learning experience. 🎆 Mentorship at Eskwelabs translates into a small-group coaching experience of a 5:1 student to mentor ratio throughout the Data Analytics Bootcamp and the Data Science Fellowship. It is undeniably a promising investment for both learners and mentors.
Eskwelabs’ Bootcamps ⛺
Project-based learning that utilises industry-relevant data complements our mentorship feature, making our bootcamps all the more worthwhile to invest yourour time and skills in. 👍 Not only that, these projects advocate for data-driven decision making on a societal level, inspiring change through insights and recommendations.
For example, Team Bastealers of our Data Science Fellowship Cohort 10 conducted a study on Age-Friendly Commerce: Fraud Protection for our Lolos and Lolas. 👵👴 Here are some of the insights 📋 and recommendations ✅ they gathered using exploratory data analysis and machine learning:
Insights
📋 Senior citizens have high vulnerability against fraud
📋 Victims of fraud are dispersed across several cities, not just in metropolitan areas
📋 Fraudsters steal in small amounts but in multiple transactions, amounting to P5,860 per victim
📋 Shopping and groceries are the most targeted commercial spaces that use credit card fraud
📋 Gradient Boosting Classifier is the best model for predicting credit card fraud against senior citizens.
Recommendations
✅ Subscribe senior customers on a fraud alert text message/call system based on the model for suspected fraud transactions
✅ Require additional verification for transactions included in the merchant list
✅ Option to name trusted third parties to view or receive information on their accounts
✅ Allow customization by seniors of spending limits or block transactions for certain categories
Team Generick from the same cohort also set an example of how to use data for good through their study titled “Content-based Recommendation System for Recipe Discovery Based on Recipe Similarities.” 🍳 Their main objective was to promote effective meal planning and create a recommender engine that will help Filipino households in effective meal planning, using local ingredients based on familiar Filipino recipes. 🥣
This innovative project will help you:
🥗 Lower costs - Save money by shopping similar ingredients you can use in several dishes
🍚 Curb food waste - Leftover ingredients can be used for your next meal
🥦 Avoid decision fatigue - Avoid last minute food deliveries by conveniently planning ahead
Outcomes of this impact is possible within your niche as long as you have accessible, quality resources, and a community who is as invested in education as you are. 🏆 Take the first step in honing your expertise and register for our bootcamps!

Harvesting a bountiful crop is a long and arduous process, but the outcome is certainly worth the effort. For many, the harvest is the culmination of months of hard work, rewarding them with a sense of accomplishment and pride. 🌈
For some, the process is already fruit in itself—a reminder on the importance of being in touch with our purpose, believing in our work and effort and understanding that patience is sometimes needed to reach the desired outcome. Until next time, Eskweloves! 👋
